Sociolinguist Rudi Janssens presented the first language barometer on Brussels in 2001. Since then, this large-scale study has been repeated by BRIO every 5 to 6 years. At the end of 2018, the results of the fourth language barometer on Brussels will be presented. Meanwhile, the analysis of the surey in the Vlaamse Rand is in progress.
What is the Language Barometer?
Via face-to-face interviews with approximately 2,500 respondents, the language use in Brussels and the Vlaamse Rand is analysed in a scientific and nuanced way. The first language barometer on Brussels (TB1) showed a highly diversified and context-related picture. The follow-up study, Taalbarometer 2 (TB2), came five years later and exposed a number of changes in the linguistic landscape. The results of the third Brussels Barometer (TB3) were presented in 2013 in the publication Meertaligheid als cement van de stedelijke samenleving. A year later, the first study on language use in the Vlaamse Rand followed. In 2018, surveys were conducted again in the Brussels-Capital Region and in the 19 municipalities of the Vlaamse Rand. The research results for Brussels will be presented at the end of 2018 and the analyzes of the second barometer for the Vlaamse Rand is planned for 2019.
