Rudi Janssens promoveerde als doctor in de Sociologie aan de VUB in 1995 met het proefschrift ‘A Boolean Approach to Attitude Measurement applied to the Integration Process of Women from Turkish and Moroccan Islamic Minorities into a Western Value System’. Hij was achtereenvolgens aan de VUB verbonden aan het ‘Centrum voor Statistiek en Operationeel Onderzoek’, het ‘Centrum voor Vrouwenstudies’ en het ‘Centrum voor de Interdisciplinaire Studie van Brussel’, het huidige BRIO.
Bij BRIO was hij verantwoordelijk voor het taalbarometeronderzoek in Brussel en de Vlaamse Rand. Hiernaast publiceerde hij onder andere over verschillende aspecten van het taalgebruik en taalbeleid in meertalige en multiculturele steden, over de relatie mobiliteit, migratie en integratie, en over verhuisbewegingen van en naar Brussel.
Hij overleed in augustus 2021.
