| 50 jaar na het afsluiten van het Verdrag van Rome (25 maart 1957) ter oprichting van de Europese Economische Gemeenschap is Brussel uitgegroeid tot een politieke wereldstad met een globale uitstraling. Dit colloquium behelst twee grote luiken. Ten eerste zal worden nagegaan welke positie Brussel inneemt in het netwerk van wereldsteden. Welke kenmerken heeft Brussel als 'globale' stad? Hoe groeide Brussel eigenlijk uit tot Europese en internationale 'hoofdstad'? Welk is zijn precies statuut als zetel van de Europese instellingen? Andere aspecten zoals de relatie tussen Brussel en het Europa der Regio's en het fenomeen van het lobbyen bij de EU zullen uiteraard ook worden onderzocht. Het tweede luik gaat in op de interactie tussen Brussel en Europa en hun wederzijdse invloed, vanuit sociaal-economisch en demografisch perspectief. Maar er zal ook worden ingegaan op de politieke, culturele en taalkundige effecten van de aanwezigheid van de Europese en internationale instellingen op Brussel. En hoe wordt Brussel 'verbeeld' als hoofdstad van Europa? Tenslotte gaat het colloquium ook in op een aantal knelpunten en spanningsvelden. |

| 50 ans après la conclusion du Traité de Rome (25 mars 1957) et la fondation de la Communauté européenne économique Bruxelles est devenu une ville mondiale et une métropole politique d'envergure globale. Le colloque comprend deux thèmes majeures. Dans la première partie on analysera d'abord la position de Bruxelles dans le 'World City Network'. Quels sont les signes particuliers de Bruxelles en tant que ville 'globale' ? Au fond, comment Bruxelles s'est développé jusqu'à devenir la 'capitale' européenne et internationale ? Quel est son statut précis en tant que siège des institutions européennes ? D'autres aspects comme la relation entre Bruxelles et l'Europe des Régions et le phénomène du lobbying seront examinés. La deuxième partie du colloque concerne l'interaction entre Bruxelles et l'Europe et les influences mutuelles, qui seront analysées du point de vue socio-économique et démographique. Mais le colloque concerne aussi les effets politiques, culturels et linguistiques de la présence européenne et internationale. Et comment est-ce que Bruxelles est 'imaginé' en tant que capitale de l'Europe ? Enfin, le colloque traitera quelques points chauds et zones de tension. |

| 50 years after the conclusion of the Treaty of Rome (25 March 1957) and the foundation of the European Economic Community Brussels has become a political world city and international capital with a global impact. This colloquium presents a number of contributions in two major parts. The first part focuses on Brussels' position in the 'World City Network'. Which are its characteristics as a 'global' city? How has Brussels grown into the European and international 'capital' we know today? Which is its legal status as European 'Capital' exactly? Of course, other aspects such as the relation between Brussels and the Europe of Regions and the role of Brussels as the place for lobbying the European Union shall be examined. The second part focuses on the interaction between Brussels and Europe and their mutual influence, from a socioeconomic and demographic point of view. What are the political, cultural and linguistic effects of the presence of the European and international institutions on Brussels? And how is Brussels 'imagined' as capital of Europe? Finally, a number of pressure points and areas of tension shall be analysed. |
